Creative Pastimes Ministry
The 'Creative Pastimes Ministry' is open to everyone who enjoys crafts such as knitting, crocheting, rug hooking, needlepoint, scrap-booking, painting, drawing or stamping. We work on any project we choose, whether it is a personal project or an outreach project. Outreach projects include: prayer shawls/blankets, newborn hats, warm knit hats for area homeless shelters and faraway seamen through the Seamen's Church Institute. Patterns are available for all these projects. Beginner knitters are always welcome to join the group. There are extra needles and yarn available and we would love to teach you how to knit. In 2017 we made 6 prayer shawls, 37 newborn and toddler hats, 8 baby blankets, 64 adult hats and 30 washcloths.
Prayer shawls/blankets are freely given to others as a gesture of compassion and peace. Please contact Pastor Hahn, or our older adult minister, Jan Ironside if you know someone who would appreciate being wrapped in the warmth and prayers of a prayer shawl. Newborn hats are donated to Hartford Hospital or taken to Haiti by our mission team. New babies at WUMC and our preschool receive a baby blanket. Adult hats are taken, with toiletries, to 'Loaves and Fishes', a Hartford soup kitchen, every January.
Meetings begin with a group prayer for the recipients of our projects, be they strangers, acquaintances, family or friends. Whenever one of us works on a project for another, at home or elsewhere, we strive to start first with prayer. If you are unable to join us, patterns are available for independent work. We are grateful to friends who are unable to meet with us who also create these gifts of love and ship them to us, many from out of state. Donations of yarn are appreciated.
The 'Creative Pastimes Ministry' meets on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Thursdays of each month from 1 - 3 PM in the Fireside Room.
